Greening Up Your Kitchen

As eco-conscious habits become more and more part of our collective culture, many people are taking to making their own homes more environmentally friendly. One of the best places to start the eco-journey is in the kitchen.

One of the biggest ways you can change the eco-friendliness of your kitchen is by being more aware of what you bring into it on a weekly basis in the form of groceries. Most North Americans buy a lot of pre-made, overly packaged foods every week; the majority of product packaging ends up dumped in landfills after each garbage day.

One of the best things that you can do for yourself and for the environment is to buy food that’s as close to its natural state as you can. This isn’t to say that you should buy raw wheat grains and grind them yourself, but you should buy uncooked, unseasoned meats and raw fruits and vegetables and cook them yourself. Not only will there be less in the way of packaging, but there will be less salt and preservatives going into YOU. Make sure to compost your uncooked, non-meat food scraps as well!

What you use to carry your groceries home makes an impact as well. Many grocery stores across the continent are not offering plastic bags to patrons any longer, instead actively encouraging them to purchase inexpensive reusable bags, bring recycled bags, or offering a biodegradable alternative. If you like a higher quality of reusable bag, check out your local shops or look online; some companies even offer a reusable produce bag for your fruits and veggies.

Another great way to green up your kitchen is by buying only really good quality cooking tools that will last a long time. A few good quality stainless steel pots and pans, a good cast iron frying pan, and some sturdy wooden utensils can last you a lifetime if you take care of them. Avoid Teflon coated pans as they have a limited life-time and there are some health concerns over the use of Teflon. Quality, energy-efficient appliances will help make your kitchen more eco-friendly as well.

The finishing touch on any green kitchen is, of course, in the cleaning; make sure that you don’t use harsh corrosive chemicals when you’re cleaning your eco-kitchen.

Once you’ve greened up your kitchen, it’s easy to move into greening the rest of your home, one room at a time!

Planting Sod Increases Home’s Value

One way to add value to your home and make it attractive to potential buyers is to have a beautiful lawn with plenty of curb appeal. A spotty, patchy lawn looks unkempt and can send the wrong message to buyers. Planting sod is a great way to immediately have a full, lush green lawn that sends a message of TLC to everyone who sees it.

Planting sod takes a bit of consideration and planning. Whether you will be planting sod on your own or hiring professionals to do it for you, you should research the type of grass you choose and make sure the preparation is done properly.

Planting sod is like painting- the quality of the job and the end result is determined by the prep work. Sod will root much deeper and grow much quicker when the underlying soil is fully prepared ahead of time. Solid, beautiful turf needs four things to thrive- sunlight, air, nutrients and water.  Before planting sod, make sure your soil is nutrient rich and ready for the type of grass being laid. In order to properly analyze your soil, you need test the pH of your soil.  If your soil is too acidic, it needs lime to balance it out. Alkaline soil needs the addition of sulfur or gypsum. To determine the appropriate level of additives to your soil, consult a sod expert or a garden professional.

Tilling the ground to a depth of at least two inches before adding your topsoil is critical for future weed control, as well as aerating the soil and preparing it properly for the new sod. Your soil may need the addition of topsoil in order to give the sod the strongest foundation to take root. Tilling the soil is the best way to allow for proper mixing between the new topsoil and the existing subsoil. Tilling should include incorporation of any new topsoil, sand or compost and lime.  Additional nutrients should be applied prior to laying sod and lightly raked into the tilled soil. Consulting a sod expert is the best way to ensure you will have the best prepared soil for your newly planted sod.

These steps help you prepare your ground for planting sod. By taking the time to make sure the ground is in the best possible condition before you begin planting sod, you have the best opportunity of increasing your home’s value with a great looking lawn.

How to use a ‘Comb Tool’ to texture your ceiling & walls

Published by ShreveportDesigner under DIY

In the UK, various methods to texture a variety of stunning patterns & designs straight onto the ceiling & walls using tools such as fingers, rollers, sponges, rags, brushes, trowels, etc: where creating designs with texture is concerned, your only limit is your imagination; but in this article I want to talk about using ‘texturing’ combs, to create some amazing affects onto your interior surfaces; if you want to see footage visit www.diy-ceiling-wall-texture.com for instructions. Texturing comb’s are very reasonably priced & now widely available to you thanks to the internet: plus, the methods for applying the texture coating to the desired surface is usually ‘rolled on, sometimes brushed on, or even trowel’d on’ instead of ‘sprayed on.’

As you can imagine, the cost for applying texture coating to your ceiling & walls this way makes it possible for the home ‘DIY’ enthusiast to ‘have a go yourself’ because all you will need is a bucket to mix the texture powder in, the tool for mixing, (either an attachment to the power drill, or a plastic texture mixing tool that you attach to a wooden handle,) the texture powder, a roller & tray to hold the mixture & of course, the texture comb;

Some texturing combs consist of a moulded ‘all in one’ design, (almost resembling that of a plastic tile adhesive spreader, but the serrated ‘comb’ edge is slightly tighter together/not spaced as wide apart from each other) whereas, the handle, and the serrated (patterning) edge are made from a moulded, plastic material, the usual length of the comb is around 10 inches long (this is ideal for creating designs onto your larger, as well as smaller ceilings & walls;) whilst other texturing combs consist of a wooden handle, with a slit cut through it, whereas a piece, or two, of flexible plastic (containing the serrated patterning edge,) is inserted;

Texturing combs, if looked after correctly could serve you a long time, but please be aware, do not wash out the combs in boiling water as this could shrivel up the serrated edges, plus also remember that, after texturing many surfaces, the serrated edge could become quite worn down, thus giving you a thinner, and more undesirable pattern depth;

To pattern the ceiling, first of all, make sure that the surface is correctly sealed and that the room is cool (no central heating on), you must mix enough texture to cover the whole surface area to be textured; secondly, after you decided which pattern/design your going to attempt, stand at the entrance to your desired room and look up to the ceiling, it is quite normal to actually start patterning alongside the wall, running across the narrow width of the ceiling, viewing from the door entrance, (but this depends entirely upon yours, or your customers personal preference.)

So, for instance, let us say that we are going to start our pattern from the door entrance wall, whereas, the pattern (once completed) will run down the (longer & narrower) length of the ceiling.

Stand with your back against the wall (in which you intend to start the pattern) & look up; this is how your going to work the pattern; as you pattern, the pattern is always behind you, and your working away from it/across the narrow width, & down the length of the ceiling; now with your back against the wall, hold your comb in the hand that feels the most comfortable for you to texture with; if you hold the comb in your left hand, slide across the wall, to the far corner of the right side of the room, this is the corner that, once you apply your band of texture, your going to start your comb pattern, & run it the width of that wall/edge, if you use your right hand, you start at the far left corner of the ceiling.

In summary, using your paint roller, roll on a band of texture, around half/three quarter inch thick depth, across the narrowest width of your ceiling, right across, from one wall edge to the other, the band of texture should be around two roller widths wide, pattern this with your comb, then continue this method throughout the whole ceiling, continuing right down the length of the area.

Everything here is fully broken down and covered in ‘Texture Revival;’ at www.lookreadlearn.com to help you more, look out for my articles concerning mixing texture & also surface preparation.

When you attempt any texturing tasks, always practice on a small area first for best results.

Thank you for reading, I hope that this article will help you further with your quest in learning to use combs to texture with.

Homogenous Home Plans- Are they good for the neighborhood?

There has been much debate recently regarding the affects of the standardization of home plans in new developments. Developers work with architects to design a home plan that is both cost effective and aesthetically pleasing. They then build entire neighborhoods or developments using this home plan.

These actions result in pleasant but homogenous neighborhoods.  There are many advantages and disadvantages to using the same home plan for all parties involved including the developer, investor, and the homeowner.

The Developer: Building an entire neighborhood is an extremely expensive endeavor. To minimize the cost of creating the home plans for the development as well as the cost of the material and labor, developers will often create one prototype of a home plan and use it over and over.

This way they are able to purchase materials on an economy of scale by buying in bulk. The labor is also more efficient since the contractors are building the same home plan each time.

There area few issues for developers when building neighborhoods with these standard home plans. If they overbuild and they encounter a recession in the housing market, they often end up with a glut of vacant housing. These units often sit there for months unoccupied and are hard to sell.

The Buyer: There are both economic and aesthetic benefits to living in communities with these standardized home plans. The first benefit is that you can purchase a cheaper home since the developer is building at a lower cost. Although the properties all have the same home plans, they are new buildings and are generally decent looking.

The Investors:
Investors usually gravitate towards these types of properties as they are cheap investments and are generally cash flow positive. They are not as concerned with the aesthetics of the home plans because they don’t actually live in the neighborhood.

However, investors face the same disadvantages as the developers. If he over builds and the market collapses, they will have to sell cheaply because of the glut in the market of properties with the exact same home plans.

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Remodeling

Your rug may be subjected to dirt, dust, sand, etc. Rugs used particularly in kitchen and bathroom areas are subjected to oil residue, cooking residue, moisture, dirt, etc. Hence your rugs may lose their vibrant color and may look dull. If your rug is not cleaned and maintained regularly, the fibers of the rug can become packed and matted. Cleaning and maintaining your rug is really a difficult job. Different cleaning and maintenance methods are there to clean and maintain your rugs. The right kind of rug cleaning and maintenance method is to be used for obtaining the best result. Make sure that the rags used in busy area such as kitchen, bathroom and hall-way has to be cleaned and maintained more often. Some of the rug cleaning and maintenance methods are as follows: Shake or beat your rug – Smaller rugs can be shaken by hand to loosen dirt and other dust particles. Larger rugs can be beaten using a handle, after suspending it over a fence or a clothesline. Vacuum clean your rug – Vacuum cleaning your rug is very important to remove dirt, dust and sand trapped in your rug. Vacuum clean the rugs having looped textures using only suction option and avoid using the rotating beater bar so that the loops are prevented from getting damaged. For cut pile rugs, vacuum cleaning must be done using both suction option and rotating beater bar. Using rotating beater bar for cleaning cut pile rugs helps in removing dust and dirt particles embedded in the rug. Do not run the beater bar over the fringe provided at the ends of some rugs. Clean your rug regularly-Dry cleaning method is the safest cleaning method for any type of rug. Wet cleaning method can be used provided you use high speed drying process. If you use wet cleaning method, reduce the use of moisture as excessive wetting may cause color bleeding or shrinking of your rug. Remove the stains in your rug-You can try to remove the stain using hot water spray, stain-removing spray, or steam spray. Certain stains such as coffee, juice, cola, milk, wine, foods, animal waste, medicines, and certain dyes must be cleaned immediately. Gently blot the stained area with a clean towel. Then blot the stained area using club soda, or a mixture of equal amount of white vinegar and cold water. Repeat this step two or three times and then blot the area again using a clean dry cloth. You can then gently wipe the area using a rug cleaning detergent. If your rug is stained deeply, it is better to use a professional rug cleaner. Rotate Your Rug – Rotate or turn your rug in order to avoid excessive fading or deterioration of a particular portion of your rug and to prevent uneven wearing of your rug. Use proper padding for your  rug- Padding helps in protecting and maintaining the shape of your rug. There are different types and qualities of padding. Lawn Growing Essentials

Young grass is cut when a little over two inches high; set the mower for a two-inch cut. It is usually advisable to roll the lawn with a light roller before the first cutting. This firms the young grass in the soil and the loose surface. Cut a few hours later. The mower for the first cut must be keen. A dull mower will pull the soft grass out in bunches. If the grass is thick it should be raked off the surface. Collecting in heaps the young grass underneath will rot.

Grass on Slopes and Terraces

Grass is the cheapest and quickest covering you can get on slopes. But it’s not always the easiest to maintain, depending upon the steepness of the slope. It’s practically impossible to maintain grass on a slope of one foot in two. Soil on slopes for grass must be in the best condition possible, well supplied with organic matter. The critical point about sloping ground is the difficulty of keeping moisture in the soil. Only when water

is applied slowly with perhaps large waterfalls or other garden water features does it penetrate a slope.

One of the hazards on slopes is the danger of both the soil and seed washing out before the seeds gain a hold. Several methods are used to overcome this. After the soil is prepared, seeded and rolled, the slope is covered with burlap of the open mesh type. This is fastened to the bank with pegs and string, or just a series of pegs. The grass grows through the burlap. This is left there to rot. Watering too is done through the burlap, if necessary. A net-like material is now sold which performs the same service.

If not too steep, the slope can be covered with hay, grass clippings, outdoor fountains, or a patio fountain. The grass mixture for a slope usually contains much fescue. Ryegrass is included because of its fast-sprouting qualities. It holds the soil until the slower-growing grasses take hold. The quantity of seed is the same as for the regular lawn. Grass on slopes is not cut as close as on a lawn and no shorter than two inches. Slopes need more watering and feeding, too, to maintain the grass.

Lawns in Shade

The problems involved in shade are the lack of sunlight and the competition of tree roots which rob the soil and grass of moisture and plant food. The ground tends to become hard and dry so that extra care in soil preparation, watering, and feeding are necessary. Spreading several inches of topsoil and fertilizer is regular practice and helps for a time. But if the trees are of the surface-rooting kind like Norway maple, beech and similar trees, the roots will soon invade the new soil. The more sunlight you can get into the area the better the chances for the lawn.

Cutting off some of the lower limbs of the trees will help-also, try cutting some of the branches out of the dense growth high up. If the soil is thin and packed hard, loosen it a few inches with a digging fork, and then add topsoil or a layer of peatmoss, or commercial humus. Spread fertilizer at the rate of 3 lbs. to 100 square ft. Use the same quantity of ground limestone, then seed with a grass mixture especially designed for a shady site. Loosening the soil under the trees will not harm them unless they are evergreens.

Leave the grass at least two inches high in a shady area or an area with wall fountains or garden statuary. Close cutting will ruin the grass in one season unless, of course, there is sufficient sunlight and the trees are well spaced. Maintain a regular program of watering and fertilizing. In spring, as growth begins, apply about 3 pounds of grass fertilizer per 100 square ft.; in late June, two pounds and, in late August or early September, another three pounds. Each fall and spring, scatter two pounds of seed over the same area to keep bare areas covered.

Landscaping Designs: Three Basic Principles

Creating a well designed landscape is a lot like creating a well designed piece of artwork.  The guiding principles of design are the same.  A well designed landscape is made of three basic elements, or principles: good balance of scale, color, and perspective.  In this article, we’ll explain what each of these design principles means, and how you can apply them when creating your landscaping plan.

The first basic principle, balance of scale, refers to the size of the various elements you incorporate into your plan.  For example, a landscape made up entirely of low, bushy plants that are all the same size would be fairly boring.  However, if you mix in a few large landscape trees, some tall ornamental grasses, and some groundcover plants, now you have a range of sizes that is more visually appealing.  A general rule of thumb is to balance the scale of your landscape by thirds.  One third of the visual space should be large, one third medium, and the last third small size.  Also remember that not all the elements have to be plants.  Other structures like trellises, arbors, and pergolas can be worked into a landscaping plan to lend additional variety and balance out the overall scale.

The second basic principle is color.  Color is a far more complex topic than many people realize; there are entire fields of study devoted to color.  To fully understand how colors work together, it is helpful to study a color wheel.  Colors are positioned around the wheel based on how they relate to one another.  Take the complimentary color scheme, for example, which is probably the most basic and fundamental of all the color schemes .  Complimentary colors are two colors directly opposite one another on the color wheel.  Other color scheme options include analogous, which is a group of two or three colors directly beside each other on the wheel, or triadic, which are three colors equidistant from each other on the wheel.  All this relates to landscape design in the colors of flower, plants, and other elements we choose.  For example, a yard made up entirely of yellow flowers would be visually overwhelming.  However, when you add a few colors next to yellow, such as orange and red, now you have an analogous color scheme that is aesthetically pleasing and visually interesting.  For more information on color schemes, it might be helpful to consult a book or website about color theory.

The last basic element of landscape design is perspective.  Perspective can mean a lot of different things, but for the purposes of our discussion, we will define it as the particular view of the observer, based on the location they are standing in relative to your yard or home.  Ideally, your landscape should have a well balanced perspective for all potential onlookers.  Many of us focus on the view of our home and yard from the street, but what about the view seen by your most frequent observers, your neighbors?  And then there is the most important perspective of all: the one seen when you are inside your home looking outward.  After all, it is your yard; shouldn’t you and your family be the ones to enjoy the most attractive view?  The point of a well designed landscape is to take into account the perspective of all potential vantage points, and try to make every view as attractive and balanced as possible.

By taking into account all three of the basic design elements, scale, color, and perspective, you will ensure that your landscape is well balanced and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.  Remember, you don’t have to have a degree in art or landscape architecture to create a beautiful landscape.  When you design with these fundamental principles in mind, you’re sure to end up with an attractive result that you can enjoy for years to come.
