Simple Ideas for Decorating a Small Bathroom

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

Most home owners that have small bathrooms wish that the room would have been made larger during construction. A small bathroom can prove to be a problem even if the purchase was a resale.

Though remodeling might not be possible if you don’t have the money, you can do many other thins to make the room look more open and spacious. In fact, you can make it so that it looks quite a bit larger than it actually is. This article will give you ideas on how to open up your bath and make it look more appealing and attractive.

By simply manipulating color and lighting in your bathroom, you can truly transform the room’s appearance. The following are a few ideas which can quickly be put to use now!

Use the Right Colors

Most people are aware that the appearance and tone of a room is greatly impacted by the use of color. Dark colors make the wall look more drawn in, in turn the room looks smaller. Colors that are lighter and brighter can visually enlarge a room and make it look bigger than it actually is.

You can visually expand the bathroom by using lightly colored neutrals and pastels. Some great colors to use in the bath would be pastels such as peach and sky blue, sand shades and creams. You should keep your ceilings and walls as light as possible, and your baseboards and door facings should be colored in contrasting, but light, hues. Your bath rugs, shower curtains and window treatments should also be kept light, and any patterns they have should share colors from the same palette.

Light Up the Room!

Whether a room looks large and spacious, or dark and receding all depends on the lighting. The room’s open atmosphere can be added to by letting natural light flood the room; and combined with other lighting, the effect can be enhanced. Recessed lighting in the ceiling or additional lighting around your vanity’s mirror should be considered.

By using mirrors, you can both reflect light and make the room look larger because of the reflection. Think about hanging an extra mirror on a wall, most likely where it can reflect light from the windows.

Add More Floor Space

While you won’t actually open up more space to walk, by removing your vanity you’ll make a huge difference in the way the room looks. Most vanities have doors, drawers, and other types of cabinetry for storing your necessities.

Removing and replacing your vanity with a pedestal style vanity will simply amaze you with the change it can make in a room. Using a pedestal vanity will add a bit of elegance to the room and will also take up very little floor space. A nearby linen closet could be a helpful place for strong your necessities. This small sacrifice will be worth the effort once you notice the improved appearance of your bathroom.

Are you ready to turn your bathroom from one that is small, into one that is inviting and spacious? Simply use light colors all over the room, add lots of lighting and take a small pedestal sink into consideration. Small changes make all the difference.

4 Things You Should Consider When Buying Bathroom Fixtures!

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

Bathroom remodeling can be extremely expensive and it can take a lot of time. One of the worst mistakes you can make is selecting the wrong bathroom fixtures. The right bathroom fixtures can make the appearance and the feel of your bathroom more pleasing and help make your bathroom a showplace.

The overall appearance of your bathroom will be changed by the bathroom fixtures. Before you go out and start buying the fixtures you need to decide who is going to do the remodeling. Are you going to do it yourself or are your going to hire an experienced contractor to do the job.

In making this decision you can not just consider the cost. If you do not have the knowledge or experience to do the work then it may ended up costing you more than it would to hire a contractor.

Whether you hire a contractor or do it yourself you still need to decide what bathroom fixtures you need for your bathroom. There are a lot of choices of bathroom fixtures for your bathroom renovation. They come in many different sizes, shapes, designs, brands, and themes.

You can browse the Internet to check out all of the available fixtures for the bathroom and will match your bathroom decor. We all know that the bathroom is a place we can go to get away from everything and hopefully everybody. The bathroom nowadays does get a lot of attention and we will spend more time and money in order to make it a place we can enjoy.

So, that makes it important that we chose the right types and styles of bathroom fixtures.

Because of the large variety of fixtures for the bathroom that is available in the marketplace you will need to know how to pick out the perfect ones for your bathroom. Here are 4 things you should consider when you are shopping for the proper fixtures for your bathroom remodeling:

1. Bathroom Theme – You will need to determine what theme you are going to use for your bathroom and then pick a vanity that will match that theme.

For example, antique brass is very popular in today’s bathrooms. If you select this theme you would want to consider Antique Brass Bathroom Fixtures and maybe choose Antique Brass Bathroom Faucets for your faucets.

2. Make Your Bathroom Comfy – When selecting your fixtures make sure you choose them with comfort in mind.

You should select your bathroom vanity and other fixtures that will add comfort that will make a relaxing atmosphere so you can enjoy the time you spend in your bathroom.

3. Size Is Important - You need to consider the size of the fixtures. You do not want to buy a large vanity for a small bathroom and a small one for a large room.

4. How Long Will They Last? You will need to choose fixtures that are made of excellent quality materials and ones that will last for a long time.

You probably will not remodel your bathroom again for several years so you want your fixtures to last. Do you know what bathroom fixtures are on the market? Well, you will be happy to know that you will find thousands of styles and types to choose from and you can start your research on the Internet.

Quick Tips for Warming Up Your Bath

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

Nothing is more luxurious in winter than a warm bathroom. Luckily, this is one luxury available for everyone, without you having to sacrifice period style or your pocketbook. So many of the more desirable options are completely affordable. For instance, plug-in electric towel warms are under $150, and overhead rain shower fixtures begin at only $60. For as little as $200, you can easily find a good pressure-balance mixer. At the other end of the spectrum, for those with money to spend, you may want to consider a jetted pedestal tub or steam shower system, which might set you back a few thousand dollars.

Today’s towel warmers and radiators come in two basic styles. There’s the traditional round tube shape and the flat-panel “Euro” style. If your bathroom is cramped, one option is a tubular towel-warming basket, which can be mounted to keep your towels hot and within easy reach.

Every towel warmer generates heat. But surprisingly, many of the hard-wired versions are powerful enough to be considered radiators. If you go with an inexpensive electric model that puts out 100 watts or so, it will keep the towels dry and reduce dampness and mildew in the bathroom. If they’re sized and placed properly, the more powerful hard-wired electric or hydronic towel radiators can easily heat larger spaces. If you’re worried about safety, neither version gets too hot to touch. Electric towel warmers only reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas hydronics range between 120 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on how hot you keep the system. These radiators can provide your bathroom with zoned heating.

When choosing a unit, you need to consider the amount of tile or stone, the type and location of existing heat sources such as steam radiators or forced air, and how many windows. A good dealer can help you find the perfect unit to suit your needs. If your bath is too tiny for even a small towel warmer, see if you can find room along the baseboard for a couple or horizontal radiator panels to keep your room nice and toasty.

When it comes down to it, however, it’s the water in the bath or shower that warms the most. If you plan on upgrading the shower anyway, consider installing a pressure-balance or thermostatic mixing valve. Inexpensive and simple, a pressure-balance valve will keep the water pressure in the shower constant, preventing sudden fluctuations in water temperature caused by such incidents as a flushed toilet, for instance.

If you’re looking for a more sophisticated system, then consider a thermostatic valve, which mixes hot and cold water to fairly precise temperatures (within one degree Celsius of the setting). These valves regulate fluctuations in the incoming water pressure as well.

Not surprisingly, prices for these truly luxurious valves begin at about $1,000, though you can easily spend more. Conveniently, many of these mixers are available in suites that include period-inspired shower heads and cross-handled knobs or levers. Higher-end valves even come with memory settings, allowing each family member to choose and record a preferred shower temperature.

If you can’t get enough humidity in winter and you love your shower, a steam shower is another great option. To install one, you’ll probably need a major retrofit, since there must be a spot for the generator and you may have to make modifications for the steam shower doors. But on the plus side, a twenty-minute steams uses very little water: only about two gallons. But a basic system—including a generator, steam head, and temperature controls—starts at about $3,000. Once you’ve added any extras such as stereo speakers, light, and aromatherapy packages, the price will go up.

Do you prefer an old-fashioned tub for your bath? Prices for reproduction roll-top designs with claw feet start at about $1,000 for either cast iron or the more environmentally friendly acrylic. These deep tubs are the ultimate soaking paradise. They also come in double-ended styles to accommodate two (or multiple children). With the claw feet available in different styles and finishes, you can choose a tub that will complement any décor. If you’re looking at high-end options, you can find custom-made tubs in copper, steel, marble, and even teak.

If your dream bath is a traditional tub with a water- or air-jet system, your best bet is to go with a pedestal or Roman tub. Strategically placed jets will turn any bathtub into a home spa. And don’t worry, the skirt will conceal the tubes and motor. A fully equipped air-jet tub isn’t cheap. Expect to pay upward of $4,000.

The Right Blinds For Bathrooms

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

Blinds for bathrooms need to fulfill two critical missions. The first is privacy. The second is moisture resistance.

In regards to privacy, the truth is almost any window treatment will offer privacy, that is unless it is made from sheer or semi sheer materials (think solar screen, or sheer fabrics). But, blinds are a particularly good choice for bathrooms because they easily offer privacy – all you need to do is tilt the slats upwards or downwards and you’re all set. Plus, blinds (horizontal are best for bathrooms), like mini blinds, wood or faux wood blinds, also offer a greater amount of air flow through the slats even when closed.

But not all blinds can handle the moisture-levels in present in most bathrooms. The first choice in blinds for bathrooms are faux wood blinds, of which there are two choices: composite wood and PVC vinyl. Wood composite blinds are made with real wood slats covered in a thermal polymer. They are scratch resistant and pretty much impervious to humidity. The same is true of vinyl faux wood blinds, except they are made from 100% PVC plastic. Of the two, wood composite blinds are a little more expensive but have a more upscale, refined look. Both are available in a variety of painted colors and stains, so matching them to your decor is no problem.

The next choice in blinds is mini blinds. There’s conflicting recommendations about whether or not they should be vinyl or aluminum. Many people recommend vinyl mini blinds for bathrooms but, the truth is today’s aluminum mini blinds will work just fine. They are coated and sealed, so there shouldn’t be any problem with rust. Vinyl blinds will work just fine too. Between the two, vinyl is cheaper but aluminum is more durable and are less prone to bending, warping, and just general damage. The last word on mini blinds for bathrooms is that either choice, vinyl or aluminum, are relatively inexpensive. So, while they will both stand-up to the bathroom environment, replacing them won’t exactly break the bank when it comes time to redecorate.

A final choice for bathroom window treatments are composite or vinyl plantation shutters. They have louvers that can provide privacy and are made from the same durable, moisture resistant materials as faux wood blinds.

To summarize, the best bathroom blinds include, faux wood blinds and either vinyl or aluminum mini blinds. For a more upscale look, consider plantation shutters. – David Brooks

What Are Dual Flush Toilets?

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

The latest innovation in bathroom technology is the dual flush toilet. As the name implies, these toilets allow you to choose from two different kinds of flushes. Why is this necessary? Well, excuse the crudeness of the next sentence, but getting rid of a number one requires less water and energy than trying to flush away a number two! You can save your water consumption by purchasing a dual flush toilet, which allows you to choose between a high or low volume flush for all purposes. In addition to drastically reducing your water bill, you can also help minimize the ecological damage to society and protect our environment.

Studies have shown that implementing two flushes in your toilet can save water consumption by up to sixty seven percent, compared to the conventional flushing system. These water savings are so substantial that some nations, especially those that have experienced shortage in hydro, made dual flush toilets mandatory to all new installations. While this technology is still new to North America, ecologists have been promoting this as an effective recommendation for a long time. In areas where drought is an ongoing concern, the dual flush toilets can be greatly beneficial.

Dual flush toilets were first introduced to the consumption market just barely a decade ago. Since few people are aware of this innovative new technology, the demand for it is not particularly high. This is attributed to the fact that most homeowners usually do not replace their existing toilet fixtures unless absolutely mandatory, so the demand and supply curve is not as high as other easily consumed household appliances. Nonetheless, the environmentalists have been working very hard to promote this new dual flush system, prompting a number of companies to invest in this technology that is sure to catch mainstream popularity one day.

After all, the benefits are undeniable. Dual flush toilets not only save water, thus decreasing the ecological damage as well as your hydro bills, but they are also worthy investments in the long term. These toilets also require less ongoing maintenance than the typical toilet, since they are less than likely to break down.

These dual flush toilets come in many state-of-the-art and cutting edge designs. With a sleek appearance and control over your flushing options, experts predict that there will soon be a highly competitive market for these toilets. Nowadays, many companies are competing against each other to come up with the most aesthetic, convenient, and comfortable designs possible. There are also plenty of different styles in flushing mechanisms. Some newer models come with two buttons. The buttoning system is preferred over the traditional push and pull lever system, since they reduce on the amount of “misflushes” that we have undoubtedly encountered at some time in our lives.

One downside to these dual flush toilets is the complex plumbing involved for the installation. It is definitely not a do-it-yourself type of project unless you are particularly skilled. Since this is a relatively new technology, there are not many people who understand the system as of yet. However, your best bet is to contact a professional plumber, thus ensuring that your new dual flush toilet is up and running!

Facts to Know About Bathtub Replacement

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

Bathtub replacement is not a simple do-it-yourself job. For starters, three different trades are employed in the entire process namely, a licensed plumber, a tile setter and a carpenter. With the complications associated with these jobs in mind, you might be better off attempting a bathtub restoration, or having someone come in with the requisite skill sets and restore it for you.

Consider your reasons why bathtub replacement is the way you want to go. It is a good idea to obtain quotations for the work that needs to be done, and ask the tradespeople for advice when they come in to take a look. That way, they will give you a fair indication as to whether you can do some of the job yourself or if it is best left well enough alone until they return. Also it gives you a fair idea of what the job entails and also the expenses that you might incur which quite often might prove to the deterrent.

Depending on the original installation, the state of repair, or disrepair, of the internal plumbing, and the condition of the tub itself, it may just make no sense at all for you to be messing around with its removal. If there is considerable degree of wear and tear, doing it yourself can seriously damage the already damaged goods and worse if you happen to wrench some crucial plumbing joint or for that matter the pipes then it might just break and the expenses then would be considerably more as then it qualifies not under repair but getting a new one.

Another issue that we need to address is the issue of damage to the tiles. If its the entire bathroom you are looking to replace then the damage to the tiles can still be accounted for but for component replacement like bathtub replacement or a shower replacement, then expenses related to the damage of the tiles isn’t something you are mentally prepared for. The situations are very complicated when you intend to keep the original tiles. In this situation the work is especially tricky as it has to be done around the area so as to avoid scratching the other tiles.

All said and done bathtub replacement and shower replacement is not a matter of joke and those with a flair for do-it-yourself ideas should refrain from doing it as it is a high skill job that not only requires the relevant skills but also may need specialized equipment to cater to the job. When opting for such work to be done in the house it is advised that relevant quotations be taken from the people involved in this trade so as to get a not only a good monetary estimate but also a good idea of what exactly is the nature of the work that will suit your plans in the long run as this is not something which you plan to do every once in a while and then letting the proper people do the job to your satisfaction.

Osmosis Reversal In Water Treatment System

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

If you find that your water has a bad smell, tastes bad, or is not clear in color, you will definitely need to find a way to change it. The rise in the costs of water treatment methods is not really a concern when you are looking for clean water that is safe for you to drink. There are many different treatment methods and equipment available for water treatment. The market is full of these items but, only a few of them are really as good and safe as they claim to be. The ones that are known for being good are now much more expensive than they used to be.

One of the new ways for you to treat your water is by using a method called reverse osmosis. This particular treatment is shown to be able to lower the amount of contaminants that are natural in the water that cause color, taste, and smell to change. These items can also make the water dangerous and not healthy for you to use. When reverse osmosis is used to treat the water, these items are taken out of the water.

The reverse osmosis water treatment method is used mostly for lowering the amount of solid waste that is known to form scale deposits after a long period of time. Chemicals such as sodium, nitrate, and sulfate are taken out of the water. Using a carbon filter in the reverse osmosis treatment method will help to reduce the amounts of pesticides, chloroform, and other compound of organic nature. These chemicals are called soluble organic compounds.

The rising technology for reverse osmosis treatment for water is also known as a super filtration treatment method for water because of the method that is used. The water is sent through a permeable membrane and it holds back any items that should not pass through it. The membrane has tiny holes that only let the molecules of water flow through it. The items that are larger are kept in the membrane and the clean water is sent to a storage tank. You may find that some of the reverse osmosis machine is using filters that deliver an electric currant to the water to get rid of the chemicals that are not wanted.

A typical reverse osmosis machine is made up of a few different parts. These parts include a filter that holds back any large pieces or particles from coming through it. The storage tank is the next part of the reverse osmosis equipment. It holds the water that has been filtered. The post filter takes the water from the tank and passes it through to rid the water of any bad taste or any other reside that still exists after the first filtration treatment. The final part is the delivery tap where the water is stored for you to use.

The biggest water treatment system is rather expensive but, will give you many more precious things that are possible from this system. Reverse osmosis treatment equipment can run for a couple of hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. It will just depend on the size of the unit and how good it works. Some of the other money that will need to be spent is for filter replacement. This runs about a hundreds to two hundred and the filter cartridge is around fifty dollars.

Use in the home is what the reverse osmosis system of water treatment is recommended for. Any chance for using the system might seem to be expensive and unnecessary. The fact remains that the reverse osmosis water treatment system is a great way to provide safe and clean water for you to drink.

You can also find more info on water treatment and extensive water treatment. eWaterTreatmentSystems.com is a comprehensive resource for water treatment with information on reviews, reverse osmosis and how it works.

Eliminate Bathroom Moisture – 5 Great Tips

Published by ShreveportDesigner under Bathrooms

Did you know that excess moisture is the leading cause of decay in bathrooms? And even worse, most bathroom moisture issues will go undetected for years – until it’s too late and menacing mold develops or structural damage befalls. The following is a list of five steps you can take toward guaranteeing that moisture will not be a problem in your new bathroom.

1] Tubs and showers should be located on interior walls -

The idea is to make certain that you are not running supply and drain lines in an exterior wall where they are subject to extreme temperature variations. These fluctuations can produce moisture in the wall around the areas where the plumbing is located and should be avoided if at all possible.

2] Proper ventilation is a must -

If you are planning your dream bath with a whirlpool tub or a steam shower you must not forget that these luxury items can create enormous amounts of steam in the bathroom. You should look for a high capacity super quiet bath fan – and don’t be afraid to spend more for a high quality unit. Make certain that the new fan is ducted through an exterior wall by the shortest path possible. Most of all, run the fan. If you have luxury items such as a whirlpool or steam shower, turn the fan on while taking a bath or steam. Afterwards, close the door and leave the fan on for a minimum of 30 additional minutes.

3] Toilet sweat… don’t sweat it -

Condensation on toilet tanks is common during the summer months when the water temperature inside the tank can be 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the air temperature. Air conditioning is the best way to eliminate this problem. Alternatively, you could consider using a toilet insulation kit or installing an anti-sweat valve which operates by adding just enough warm water to the tank to keep the temperature differential to a minimum.

4] Looks vs. leaks -

If you are planning a large and costly master bath remodel it’s not likely that you will consider using anything other than tile for your shower. If your goals and means are more modest, then you might consider using a one piece shower unit. By design, these units are seamlessly constructed and when properly installed will provide the ultimate protection against leaking. Of course, tile applications look nicer, but each grout line is an opportunity for water to penetrate.

5] Design a dryer wall -

On exterior walls the location of the vapor barrier can play a big roll in determining how much moisture is trapped in the bathroom. This issues is relatively simple to address in a bathroom remodel. The determining factor in proper vapor barrier placement is climate, as moisture typically moves in the direction from warmer areas to colder areas.

Your geographic location will determine proper vapor barrier placement. In Michigan we have a heating climate dictating that vapor barrier is placed on the interior of wood wall and ceiling framing while permeable exterior sheeting is used to allow for any vapor that does get into the wall to escape. In a cooling climate the opposite may be true. Check with a local building expert to design the best system for your location.
By applying these five tips when remodeling of your bathroom, you can help fight the effects of moisture and have a great looking and functioning bathroom for many years to come.
