Ask any mother what her favorite season is, and most likely you’ll hear the word Autumn spoken. Of course, the season signals the beginning of the new school year, so what mother could argue with that? Now, while people tend to associate Spring as the time of renewal and fresh starts, one can argue that the fall season is a good starting point as well. School starts in the fall, and you never hear about the “new spring season” on television, right? Therefore it makes sense that if you are interested in new home improvement projects for your home, why not begin just as the leaves are changing color?

Think about Autumn where you live…how quickly does the weather turn cool? Are you in a location at risk for hurricanes and other inclement weather? How and where you live will determine the best improvement procedures for your home, and it’s always a good idea to consult with a reputable contractor in your area who can also recommend the best fixes for your interior, backyard, and front landscaping. It’s probable you’ll hear these five suggestions as you browse possible additions to your house:

1) Awning installation – If you want to continue entertaining on your deck or porch but aren’t looking forward to shivering in the cold, a retractable awning can help block winds and retain heat from a fire shoppe setup. Not only that, they look attractive, and you don’t have to worry about snow build-up – a retractable awning does just that when you’re not using it.

2) Porch enclosure – If you would prefer to separate your back entertainment area from the yard altogether, consider an enclosure and turn your porch into a Florida room. This makes the space usable year-round with large glass windows that bring in light and help keep the temperature perfect for an intimate brunch or cozy evening.

3) Roof installation – After the heat of the summer has faded, and before snow threatens to burden you with days of shoveling, it’s a good time to check your roof for any needed repair or replacement. Make sure the ventilation is working properly, too, so you don’t waste money on heating bills in the winter.

4) Attic insulation – As the weather gets colder, think of the condition of your attic. Is it properly sealed against the elements? To make sure nothing is leaking, it’s good to check on the condition of the insulation and make repairs where needed.

5) Window replacement – Windows bring in natural light, which can cut down power bills. They also keep the outside…out. If you have lived in your home a while, take note of the condition of your window glass. You may wish to replace any brittle windows or else update your home’s look.

Don’t wait through another winter to get your home in shape for the new seasons. Fall is a great time to think about home improvement. Send the kids back to school and get to work yourself on making your home work better for the whole family.

Kathryn Lively is a freelance writer specializing in articles on Virginia Beach window replacement and Virginia Beach green home improvement.

If you think you would like to build a homemade solar panel, you should know a few things first. Solar energy is one of the best sources of renewable energy that is absolutely free. It is a fact that the sun will come up every single morning, and you will be able to benefit from the sun’s energy with a homemade solar panel.

Of course a single homemade solar panel will not do very much for you as far as cost savings go. One panel may run some outdoor lights or a small kitchen appliance or two. It is not going to power your larger appliances or save you thousands of dollars annually. If, however, you build a homemade solar panel and then decide to build many more of them (once you know how to build them), then you are on the path to more substantial savings.

If you consider the cost of building a single solar panel – around $200.00, and the cost of your electrical bill – probably at least $150.00 per month if you have a family of four and a single detached dwelling – then you can recover this cost in approximately one year, easily. In addition, the costs that you save are never expended again, because you now have a permanent renewable energy source installed in your home.

Selecting a good guide that is easy to follow is probably the most important part of the process of building solar panels. There are plenty of guides available, so how do you decide which one is the best one? Most people will read several reviews to see what other people are saying about the product. Even better, if you can locate a website that has reviews as well as actual experience with building the particular product, then you should absolutely read that person’s review. A person who has ordered the product, purchased the supplies, built the product and installed it has a huge advantage over someone who is just “guessing” what the product is about.

A guide should also offer a money back guarantee in the event that you order one and then decide that it is not something that you will be able to complete. Sometimes even the best laid plans do not have a positive result, and you need at least 60 days to decide if this is something that you will be able to follow through with.

Visit YourGreenEnergy.org and contact me to receive your free guide http://yourgreenenergy.org on alternative energy now!

However, in the past few years many advances have been made in solar panel technology. When you start doing the math, this technology is going to save many homeowners a ton of money. This innovation in the technology comes to fruition when you begin building your own solar panels. Below we have compiled three reasons why this will save you money.

1. Building Your Own Solar Panels Costs Significantly Less Than Using A Prebuilt Option

We need to get out a misconception here. Many people believe that building your own solar panel is too difficult for them, or only available to the engineers above us. This is simply not true. With the correct guide, you can definitely do it, and for a fraction of the retail price that you would be paying. Contractors and those who are “solar panel specialists” are nothing more than companies who have read the guides and resources available to them. Considering the amount of money you can save versus the time commitment, it is a no brainer to do this one yourself.

2. The Panels Themselves Have Hit The Sweet Spot

Like any technology, the longer it is on the market the less expensive it gets. Right now we have hit the sweet spot between pricing and tax cuts. Most countries in the world, including America offer many tax benefits to powering your home with solar energy. As the technology becomes more commonplace, the governments will back up on their tax cuts. By getting into the game now, you are looking at saving a significant amount of money in materials and installation costs.

3. Advances In The Panels Make Them More Effective

In the beginning, solar panels could barely convert enough energy to heat a pool. Nowadays, the home panels can literally power your entire home for the month. Your energy bill could literally disappear overnight. On top of that, solar power is a much greener prospect and goes a long way towards saving our environment.

Conclusion

Because of the many advances in solar technology, it has never been a better time to invest in solar technology. The prices are hitting the right point, and the panels themselves can convert more energy. To top it off, it is now feasible to build your own panels. To learn step by step how to build your own panels check out the resource below which offers you FREE report to get you started on the right track.

Click here http://www.GoingGreenSavesYouMoney.com for instant access to a valuable FREE report, tips, tricks and hot insider information on Building Your Own Solar Panels and save money!

Many people finance residential solar panels, and their property value increases by as much as the solar panel cost, and 10% extra. There are many rebates that are offered by state governments, to the people who get these panels for their homes.

What is the average cost of getting these panels for home?

The cost of these panels generally depends upon the energy requirements and size. Your requirements may largely differ from someone else’s requirements. The ROI of these panels also depends on the area where you live. With the rapidly developing technology in the field of solar power, these panels are getting more and more affordable for common people.

Depending upon your requirements, you might need a panel or a group of panels, and this might result in a difference of tens of thousands of dollars. You might be having a small one room house, which can be easily powered by solar panels, whereas the same solar panel would not be adequate for a ten room house.

Here are a few steps to get the most benefits from these panels:

1. Try to consume less electricity. This can be done by simply switching off the power supplies as and when you’re not using them. You can also use CFL light bulbs instead of the traditional light sources. If your electricity consumption reduces, the electricity generated from these panels would be adequate to cover up your power needs.

2. Determine the correct size of the solar panels. To find out the perfect size of these panels required for your house, you can make use of a solar installer, who will come to your house and tell you the exact size that you would require. This again depends upon your power usage, and the climate of your area.

3. Get rebates. When you have solar panels on your roof top, you are eligible for the Energy Efficient Mortgage (E.E.M). You can get finance for these panels from the EEMs. Also, most states in the U.S. offer tax rebates to people who rely on green energy sources. This is another factor where you can save your money.

These are just some points by which you can get the maximum advantage from these panels. These panels help you in another way. The mortgage value of your house increases a lot, if you are using green energy sources, like solar panels. These panels can be used in a number of ways- from floor and pool heating, to covering the power requirements of the entire house. With rapidly developing solar technology, more and more efficient panels are being invented.

You should get residential solar panels for yourself, and save money off your electricity bills.

The author has been writing articles online for over 4 years now.

By now most of us know the terms renewable and non-renewable as they refer to to energy sources. But the ongoing consumption of the non-renewable sources of energy is getting a lot of attention these days. A severe energy crisis is coming and no one can escape the effects of it. Should we leave it in the hands of the government, or take it upon ourselves to save power? Yes, there are things we, the people, can do.

Let us look at how you can conserve energy at home.

The Computer: Shut off the computer and monitor when they are not in use. Maybe you can even practice this at the office.

Light Bulbs: Switching to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs is another way to save energy. You might pay more for them up front than for incandescent bulbs, but the benefits of the CFL bulbs will prove more cost-effective in the long run by the amount of electricity they will save. Compact fluorescent bulbs can save around $60 a year.

Turn lights off when you exit the room.

Air Conditioner: Set the thermostat higher in the summer and lower in the winter. Even a couple of degrees can help save energy. Change the filters as often as needed.

Washing Machines: Reduce the number of washes by waiting for a full load of laundry every time. Use cold water instead of warm or hot.

Television: Unplug your television (and other electronics for that matter) when you’re not using it.

Water: Set the hot water heater temperature at the minimum heat you can be comfortable with. Cover your hot water heater with an insulating jacket, especially if it’s in an unheated part of the house. Change showerheads to low-flow models.

Refrigerator: Turn the thermostat to about 37 degrees and make sure the seals are tight. If leftovers are still hot, allow them to cool to room temperature before putting them away. You can also save energy by taking cold or frozen food out of the refrigerator before the meal preparation, thereby saving power in heating it.

Dishwasher: Only run the dishwasher when it is full. Let the dishes air dry.

Remember, even things that are not being used at the time are consuming electricity if they are plugged in.

If feasible, replace older appliances with energy efficient models.

Check your home for proper insulation.

Request a home energy audit from your local power company. This can help you see how and where your home may be energy-inefficient.

FINALLY: Eliminate your power bill altogether by generating your own electricity with a magniwork generator, the very latest in DIY energy technology. Read the complete guide at: Magniwork Generator

I am dedicated to researching and providing information that will contribute to a better and cleaner lifestyle for all. If it be energy issues, diets or positive forward thinking I will promote it. http://solar.how-to-digitals.com

Interior designers and builders agree that the first element to consider when beginning to finish a room is flooring, because it sets the mood.

According to professionals, more and more people are bypassing tile and carpet and instead choosing wood. But what kind of wood should you go with? Solid hardwood? Engineered wood? Reclaimed antique wood? Despite all the options, making the right choice for your tastes and circumstances is easier than it appears. Here are some factors to consider, along with some useful advice from the experts.

Which Wood-Flooring Type Should You Choose?
Solid Hardwood: Although solid hardwood expands and contracts and sometimes creaks, its natural beauty will always add value to your home. Even better, it can be re-sanded and refinished, so it retains its value.

Engineered Wood Floors: These floors are constructed of thin sheets of wood glued together and finished at the factory. The resulting product resists buckling and warping, make it more staple than solid wood. Engineered wood floors were developed to be glued over concrete, but they can also be nailed or floated, whereas solid wood can only be nailed to a subfloor.

Reclaimed Antique Wood: This is a custom made flooring option tailor-made one plank at a time according to the customer’s specifications. This flooring type is especially stable, because it can cut from the center section of a beam.

Finished vs. Unfinished
One of the benefits of solid hardwood flooring is that it’s available finished or unfinished. If you’re trying to match an adjacent floor, you’re better off going with an unfinished option and staining it to blend. Finishing the floor on site will insure a more uniform color and finish. Remember, however, that an unfinished wood floor may take several days to install, stain, and finish.

Whether solid or engineered, finished wood is factory sanded, stained and finished, so it’s easier and faster to install, not to mention much less messy because there’s no on-site sanding or finishing. If you’re installing flooring in a high-traffic area, finished wood is the way to go because it’s so durable. Another plus is that it’s less expensive than unfinished wood.

Important Things to Consider
One feature that’s becoming more common is radiant heating, where the heat source is under the floor. When this is the case, then engineered wood is preferable over solid hardwood because of its durability. The National Wood Flooring Association also recommends using quarter-sawn or rift-sawn wood due to the durability factor. According to the NWFA, since narrow boards fare better than wide ones when there are changes in temperature and humidity, with this type of heating, strip flooring is preferable over plank flooring.

Stoddard recommends engineered wood flooring for seaside homes, because it’s scratch-resistant—and less like to be damaged by tracked-in sand—and requires less maintenance. Engineered hardwood flooring is clearly the best option for any interior that’s not environmentally controlled, such as those in cottages, summer homes, or below-grade installations.

Some Simple Design Tips
When personalizing a room, understated detail is important. A great look is to use a lighter wood overall and then either add a dark border or drop in a maple medallion that looks like an area run.

It’s become more and more popular to mix woods from room to room. Dark woods, like walnut and cherry, work well in cozy rooms such as a den or bedroom, but it’s best to choose a lighter, brighter wood, such as maple or birch, for the kitchen.

If you are going for a formal, traditional, or historic look, then darker wood is the way to go. Country, casual, and contemporary homes are better suited to lighter woods. Design your floor to complement fabrics, furnishings, and accessories.

Current Trends in Wood Flooring
The latest options in the flooring market include hand-scraped wood and “exotics” from far-off lands. Woods such as Brazilian cherry, Santos mahogany, and Amendoim have delightful grains and colors. All are available both in solid hardwood or engineered wood.

The old look and simplicity of woods such as Old Groove Eastern White Pine is becoming increasingly popular among owners of historic homes on the Eastern seaboards. For owners of historic homes on the Eastern seaboard, woods such as Old Groove Eastern White Pine are prized for their old look and simplicity. Lately, dark woods have significantly increased in popularity, with walnut in the greatest demand.

DIY and Maintaining Your Wood Floor
Don’t be intimated by the prospect of installing your own wood floor. About 30 percent of people do it themselves. If you can operate a nail gun and a saw, then you can do it. Many resources are available to help you with this project, including instruction books and information online.

One of the great thing about wood flooring is that it’s low maintenance. Keep a step-off mat at any doorway, and then all you need is a regular schedule of sweeping and vacuuming. Clean up any standing water immediately; it should never be left on a wood floor. It’s advisable to keep an extra box of wood in case you need to replace a strip.

Fortunately, natural hardwoods survive many household mishaps much better than laminates and synthetics, since the grain and pattern of solid hardwoods go all the way through. Scuffs and burns that would be permanent in a synthetic surface can be repaired with relative ease.

For the past 25 years Avo Barsoumian has helped home owners with their home flooring and interior decorating needs. He owns and operates a flooring company in Los Angeles. They have a huge selection of elegant hardwood flooring, beautiful laminate flooring and plush carpeting. It doesn’t matter whether your searching for cheap laminate flooring for your new home or cheap carpet to makeover your older home then Carpet Wagon has exactly what you’re looking for.

These conservation tips are for adults and children:

#1. In the winter, set your home’s thermostat to the coolest degrees without making your rooms uncomfortable.

#2. Lower your home’s thermostat at bedtime or while you’re away during the day.

#3. Inspect your home for drafts around doors and windows, then use weather-stripping, caulking, and door sweeps to seal your home from the cold..

#4. Have your furnace inspected and tuned up every 2 to 3 years. Furnaces run more efficiently when the air filters are clean – replace or clean every two months.

#5. Set your water heater’s thermostat to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or replace it with energy-efficient solution.

#6. Manage home’s water usage by taking shorter showers, washing clothes in cold water, and not wasting dryer cycles on clothing that may be dried on a hanger or clothes line.

#7. Install a programmable thermostat for home heating to manage temperature with your schedule.

#8. Replace traditional, incandescent lighting with fluorescent bulbs and fixtures.

#9. Insulate home’s attic and walls, and around heating ducts that pass through unheated spaces.

#10. Purchase high-efficiency furnace, water heater, washer/dryer, and dishwasher when it’s time to replace worn-out models.

#11. Drapes and blinds are added insulation to keep heat in at night and sun in daytime.

#12. The heating system needs to circulate air for efficient use of energy – don’t block registers, baseboards, or cold air returns.

#13. If you are installing a new heating system, consider a geo-thermal heat pump to increase energy efficiency.

#14. Install water-saving showerheads and faucets. They reduce the amount of water released and amount of electricity to operate water system.

#15. Insulate hot and cold water pipes.

Because of the global economy and unpredictable impact the oil spill will have on oil, people are more serious about reducing their home electric bills. The bills range from $150 to $400 per month and that money is needed for other expenses.

Do you want to know how your energy consumption compares to other homes in your area? Home energy yardstick allows you to do it. With this tool you have the power to know if your energy consumption is reasonable. It is very important to be conscious of how we spend our money and how we use our energy at home because we are running out of resources. Nothing is free these days even the water we drink has a price tag and so does the energy that we use daily. If we can use energy less then it would also mean less the risk of harming our environment. We should use the home energy yardstick to measure not only our energy consumption but also our intelligence on how we use energy in our daily lives.

When we talk about energy the word global warming will naturally follow. It is normal in life that every action we make there is an equal reaction. If we continue our irresponsible acts in using the energy we will harm the environment and it will not only affect us but also the future generations that will follow us. We only have one earth. If we destroy this planet where will we live? What will happen to us? Maybe right now the effect the global warming is not yet felt by humans but time will come when everything here on earth will lose their equilibrium because of climate change and it will mark the end of humanity and the end of life here on earth.

Do you really want that to happen? If not, then do your part. Participate in rehabilitating our planet, change your bad habits that can be destructive to the environment, discipline yourself to use your energy resources efficiently. It is not too late to change our ways we use the energy but the question is, are you willing to reduce your energy consumption so that the environment can be a better place to live in? Aside from using the home energy yardstick to be energy efficient you can also determine your energy efficiency by conducting a home energy check up. You can hire a professional to conduct a home energy check up or you can do it yourself.

Being thrifty is very important these days, with the rate of unemployment rising and the sky high cost of utility bills it pays to be wise and thrifty. Our monthly energy bills are eating up our expense budget and it is very depressing to see our income column stay constant while our expense column climbing up. There are effective ways of energy saving that will not cost you a single dime but will not take away the luxury of comfort like planting vegetables, flowers, different variety of plants on your roof top making it a “green roof”, regularly clean your air conditioner to remove dust, hair and other particles. There are hundreds of ways to help save our earth we just need to be innovative. Just choose one or two and it will make a huge difference.

Roy Stonebright is fanatical about saving money and energy.
