How to Spot a Cowboy Installer
You would think it would be easy to spot a cowboy installer, but the sad fact is that over 3 million people in the UK each year, are conned by cowboy builders.
The majority of botched installations and bad work can be avoided, just by taking a look at the companies paperwork and asking a few simple questions. Lack of good paperwork and correspondence will be a prime give away, without it the company that you are proposing to use, will immediately show that they are disorganised and alarm bells should start to ring.
Take a look at some simple checks to avoid a costly mistake.
* Check the companies credentials, are they a member of a certified organisation e.g. Certass or Fensa. Ask to see their current membership. These organisations are contactable by telephone, if in any doubt give them a call and see if your proposed installer is registered or has any bad history.
* A company without an address or just a mobile number on it’s paperwork will be difficult to contact in the event of problems or worse no paperwork at all.
* Opportunists – men in vans that just knock on your door and hassle you about a misted window or cracked pane of glass. No double glazing company worth it’s salts would just knock on your door out of the blue.
* The quotation doesn’t go into enough detail – what exactly will your money be going on, what profile system and what type of windows will you be getting. Does it include your everything or are there hidden extras e.g rubbish removal or window furniture etc.
* Are they offering an Insurance Backed Guarantee. This should cover both your deposit and their work. The guarantee should cover you if the company go out of business and for at least 10 years.
* Do they invite you to pay by cash – whoa hold on there – alarm bells should ring if the company is listed as limited, but the owner is asking for a cheque to be written to a personal account. Cheques should be written out to the company for tax purposes.
* VAT – in order to charge it the company needs to be registered for it, they should have a registration number showing on their paperwork and be charging the correct rate. Not every limited company is VAT registered and there is nothing illegal about not being VAT registered, it just means the companies turn over has not reached that thresh hold within that VAT year.
* Your local council may have a list of known rogues within the community. Check, ask around, at the very least verify their work. Ring any references they offer or better still visit any properties to see the standard of the work. Genuine companies are very proud to show off previous work and happy customers are usually keen to talk about their experiences.
These may seem obvious points now that they have been pointed out, if so how come over 3 million of us are still being ripped off!!
Remember if in doubt ask for proof.
